This weeks blog was brought to you by Conor.

Hello parents,

We just took our first test on decimals. The kids are loving the new unit in math .We are learning how to multiply, add, divide, and subtract  . we will retest those who did not get a four (mastery). WE are doing multiplication and division with decimals in Mrs. Johnson’s class. We just took m cap test and are class average is… drum roll pleas bdbdbdbdbdbd  7.9.  Benchmark for 5th grade is a score of 7. Below  you can practice your multiplication skills and see if you are as sharp as you think you are.

9/789=            4637×78=       538.69×37984=                      !NO PEEKING!     1 87.66     2 36.128    3=204614.7196       the fastest calculated time was 5.5 minutes.  Suvan is the record  holder with Conor right behind him with 5.6.

In Inquiry we are learning about the the colonial days as you all know, and on Monday we are going to the library to study. If your daughter/son has library card please send them with it.

We will also have a “Colonial Days” market on Thursday. Students can bring a craft or food item to sell. We will use our class money to buy goods from other classmates.

We are making an island for are final assignment in our unit of Inquiry. The due date is December 3rd.It can be made out of a drawing, wooden structure, lego, or clay.We are making a brochure in class. We will finalize the brochure in class. The rules/requirements are you need a flag. Make it colorful. A constitution of the land “This should declare the Supreme law of the land.” In it you should think about what your society values. How does your constitution insure that your society/island functions in the way you see as important. After you are satisfied with your draft of your islands construction, rewrite it an tea stained paper to make it look old school and official. :]. And an essay

Hello Friendly Parents! – Conor

We are starting a new math unit. Students are loving it! We have also started a 1 – 4 scale. Some students like the scale, and some do not. For example, Suvan says, “I like the scale. It gives students something to shoot for.” The new unit in math is decimals. If the students have any money they can use it to count and practice. For example, take away $16.46 from $20. How much is left?

**** The 1-4 scale is a student, self-assessment strategy. Where are you in your understanding? Students then practice leveled work and make their way up to a 4. Growth mindset!

Behind the Scenes in Workshop – Alora

We started workshop a couple months ago. It is still a little new, but we have gotten the hang of it.

Personally, workshop is my favorite time of the day (besides lunch). I love to manage my own time and really work hard to get stuff done. Workshop is  a test to see if we can avoid temptations and get our work completed. That is why it is so hard for some students.

Some tasks I strive to complete in workshop are: math practice, a journal entry and unfinished work. Workshop is from 12:30 – 1:25. Mrs. Johnson always gives us enough time, we just need to use it wisely.

Workshop is  a great time to use your abundance of knowledge and put that into our everyday lives.

What it’s Like to Teach Mrs.Johnson’s Class – Ava

The kids of Mrs. Johnson’s class think Mrs. Johnson’s class might be fun to teach, but maybe Mrs. Johnson herself has a different opinion. We asked Mrs. Johnson one question, “How is it teaching our class?” Three quotes she said answered it all:

“It is like going to a circus everyday! There are fun rides, scary attractions and lots of fun! I go home every night exhausted, but happy.”

AAAWWUBBIS  – Maggie

I know you think this word sound like the teacher fell asleep on the keyboard 🙂 But, it really helps you with creating complex sentences in your writing! It helps by giving you opener words such as: After, Although, As, When, While, Until, Because, Before, It, and Since.

Example: After she returned home, Lilly decided to eat.

Oliver’s Weekly Math Problem!!!

With your student, solve the problem then compare answers. Check back next week to see the answer!

Mrs. Simon bought 1.5 pounds of Mozzarella cheese for $4.50. Each pound is $3.00. If Mrs. Simon buys twice as much cheese, how much will she pay?

What It’s Like to be a StudentAudrey Ann

Everyone learns in Mrs. Johnson’s class! We have learned different types of math, cells and more! I’m sure you have heard about all of this, but what about from a different student’s perspective? Now, I’m going to ask for some thoughts of what some students are getting out of Mrs. Johnson’s class.

Audrey B. – “I think Mrs. Johnson is a great teacher. She like to interact with her audience. She isn’t boring at all!”

Oliver – “I am enjoying the way Mrs. Johnson is teaching. I like the speed we are going. She is not boring.”

Ruby – “I like how she makes learning fun. I also like the new strategies we are learning.”

Conor – “I feel like I’m doing okay in class, but sometimes I’m feeling a little rushed.”

Ava – “I think I’m doing pretty well because of Mrs.Johnson’s teaching. I think she really engages the audience.”

Now you know what it is like to be in our classroom – a fun learning environment! Personally, I think Mrs. Johnson is a great teacher! Now, students keep on learning and teachers keep on teaching!

In Mrs. Johnson’s 5th grade class we are learning multiplying and dividing numbers up to 10,000’s. Everyone in the class has taken a re-test on our math concept so we can all master this unit.

To give more information, I am going to interview my classmate, Maggie. According to Maggie, she feels she did well on the test because she studied. However, Maggie said she could use a bit more practice. Maggie also informed me that she is strong in the multiplication algorithm. To conclude this blog, I would say that our math unit has taught us a lot!

Specials

By: Audrey Ann

Lately, we have been working very hard in specials. Teams 5A, 5B, and 5C have been exploring the great worlds of P.E., Art, French, and Design Tech.

In French, we all have been learning a Halloween song. As we still continue to push ourselves to learn all sorts of new French words and sayings.

In P.E., we have been playing some fun, energetic activities. On Tuesday we played “egg” which took both team work and speed. Maggie explains, “I always thought it was fun. But on Tuesday, for some reason it wasn’t. I thought people were ganging up on us and cheating.”

D.T, the other students and I have been working on some computer programs. We have been taking photos and editing them. We have also made some folders to hold them. I asked a classmate what she thought of D.T.  “I think D.T. is doing well. Ever sense I was little, I have wanted to be an architect and get better at computer programing.” explained Ava.

In art, we have been celebrating Day of the Dead. We made a person we love, or have lost and painted them. We will get them back soon. Alora says, “I have enjoyed being creative and free.”

Mindfulness

By: Petra

In our class we are working on being mindful.  “Know thy Self” was a quote in Shakespeare and is still very important in our everyday life.

Mindfulness can always be improved. Some exercises that can help improve mindfulness are closing your eyes for 1 minute and just thinking – finding one thing in your environment you can concentrate on, ask questions or see how long you can go without speaking and just listening to what is going on around you.  Being mindful will help you make a difference in the world!
